Cyrus Pallonji Mistry is an Irish Businessman of Indian origin. He was the chairman of the Tata group from 2012 to 2016. He also was the only second after Nowroji Saklatwala to not bear the surname Tata. In mid-2012, he was chosen as the chairman by a selection panel to head the  Tata Group whereas in 2016 the same selection panel of The board of Tata Groups holding company voted to get rid of Mistry after proposing him an offer to resign voluntarily. For the time then former chairman Ratan Tata returned as interim chairman and Natarajan Chandrasekaran was named as the new chairman after a few months. However, the NCLAT decided the appointment of Natrajan illegal and restored Mistry in December 2019. Mistry is additionally a member of the National Integration Council together with a net worth of approx. 10 billion dollars and also owns a stake of 18.4% in Tata Sons through his investment firm Cyrus Investment Pvt. Early Life

Cyrus Mistry was born in Bombay now Mumbai to a Parsi family to the billionaire and construction tycoon Pallonji Mistry and his wife Patsy Perin Dubash. Both the oldsters have roots in India but believe in the Zorastrian faith. Mistry has an elder brother  Shapoor Mistry and has two sisters Laila and Aloo. Shapoor Mistry with Irish citizenship married to Behroze Jehangir, the daughter of Parsi lawyer Rusi Setha whereas his sister Laila is married to London based portfolio fund manager and his second sister is married to Noel Tata, the half brother of Sir Ratan Tata.  His family has been active in the construction business for over a century but it was in 1930 that Cyrus’s grandfather first acquired a stake in Tata’s son. Which now is 18.4% held by Mistry’s father which is also the largest block of shares by a single party as 66% of the stake is under control of charitable trusts

Cyrus Mistry’s Education

He completed his schooling at the prestigious Cathedral and John Connon School in south Mumbai. He studied at Imperial College London and was awarded a Bachelor of Engineering in civil engineering and applied science from the University of London in 1990. He also studied at London Business School where he was awarded by International Executive Masters in management from the University of London in 1996.

The elder son of Pallonji Mistry is married to Rohiqa Chagla daughter of India’s one of the leading lawyer Iqbal Chagla’s who also planned the course of action for Cyrus Mistry against Tata Sons in the legal battle. Mistry and Rohiqa are blessed with two sons namely Firoz Mistry and Zahan Mistry. He also has Irish citizenship and permanent citizenship in India.

Mistry’s Career

Cyrus after completing his degree in Bachelor of Engineering in civil engineering from the University of London joined the family construction corporate as a director in 1991 and also has been the managing director{M.D.} of Shapoorji Pallonji company and later become the chairman of Tata Sons and the Tata Group. He has also been awarded as the most vital industrialist in India and Britain by the “The Economist” in 2013.

Syrus Mistry And The Tata Sons

\Cyrus joined the board of Tata sons on 1 September 2006 just after one year his father retired who served as the Director of Elxsi from 24 September 1990 to 26 October 2009. Mistry was appointed as the chairman of Tata  Sons in 2013 and later also become the chairman of all main Tata companies which includes Tata Industries, Tata iron and steel, Tata Motors, Tata Power, and tata chemicals. But in 2016 the Tata sons board voted to get rid of Cyrus from the chairmanship of Tata Sons.

Verdicts By NCLT

The supreme court on march 26 sat National Company Law Tribunal aside the order of restoring Cyrus Mistry as Executive Chairman of Tata Group.

  • 2018 verdict:- In July 2018 the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLAT) issued an order in favor of  Tata Sons based on poor management by Cyrus Mistry in the year 2016 through a vote of non-confidence which resulted in the outing of Cyrus Mistry’s chairmanship in Tata Sons.
  • 2019 verdict:- In December 2019 the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLAT) bring bac Cyrus Mistry as the Chairperson of Tata Sons to complete his remaining terms of years and also declared the appointment of then CEO Natarajan Chandrasekaran as executive chairman illegal. In January 2020 Tata Sons Appealed the Supreme Court against NCLAT’s order but the supreme court also ordered the Tata Sons to not exercise power under article 25
